Moving into the next phase

We are moving into the next exciting stage of the national work to support NQSWs and their employers in Scotland. This phase of the project is focused on supporting a small-scale early implementation of the agreed NQSW Supported Year and core elements with identified employers across a range of settings.

Employers were asked to apply for a grant which they could utilise in a flexible way to meet responsibilities and embed the core elements of the NQSW Supported Year within local arrangements and systems. The funding is intended to enhance not replace employers current staff development funding and activities.

The SSSC will support the early implementation areas individually and collectively.  The early implementation phase includes employers from a range of geographical areas and settings.

Sharing learning and collaborating for change

There is an expectation that the learning and resources will be shared with the wider sector on a regular basis throughout the phase and the NQSW website will be central to this dissemination.  The early implementation will also inform any further refinement of the approach and the final recommendations to be submitted to the Scottish Government in March 2022.

Keeping you informed

We will be keeping you up to date on the early implementation work through regular news posts on this website. You can also find out how the work is progressing in our dedicated early implementation space on this website.

We will be holding information sessions for anyone interested in the work later this year and will post dates and details soon.

The Scottish Social Services Council have launched this new dedicated website for NQSW in Scotland, their employers and their managers/supervisors. There is specific information and relevant resources for these different audiences. We hope the website will help support consistency for the NQSW experience in the supported year in practice. The website will evolve as we develop our national project and we will be using the website to keep everyone up to date.

If you are an NQSW you can go straight to the most relevant material for you. We will be continuing to develop the resources that are available in 2021-22. There will be a range of information to begin with that we will add to.

Throughout the website we have included reflective questions on key practice areas and you can also download these questions in a journal format. You can adapt this journal to suit your own style.

We’ve included useful ideas for NQSW, managers, supervisors and employers throughout the website. We have also included resources and tips that have been shared by other NQSWs that we’ve spoken to as part of our development work. You will find information and links to resources linked to key practice areas as well as new resources and information that we have written directly for the website.

For NQSW you will be able to find clear information about the formal registration requirements. There is also a new suite of resources to help you get the most out of professional supervision.

We will also have a section supporting transitions from qualifying social work programmes to employment as an NQSW.

We hope the website will support your journey as an NQSW and we will make the information available as soon as we can. For any more information and to be kept in touch about the website please contact us at

The implementation group is working on our national approach to the NQSW supported year. There are representatives from different social work organisations in Scotland, NQSWs and other stakeholders.

We provided an update on the different national workstreams at our recent meeting in March 2021.

  • NQSW online resources
  • Effective transitions from university to employment as NQSW
  • Supervision and professional development for NQSWs
  • Revision of NQSW Standards
  • Engagement activity and capacity building

We’ll be updating you with more information on all these areas of work through this website as the national work progresses.
