Transitions – student to newly-qualified social worker

Introduction

We are working with course providers and employers in Scotland to develop clear information and resources to support you in making a successful transition from student to Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW).
A central part of this is the development of a consistent approach across all university programmes to the Individual Development Plan (ILP). This is to ensure that your learning needs at the end of your university course are taken forward to your role as an NQSW.

We are refreshing this website, if you have difficulty accessing the ILP template, please contact nqswproject@sssc.uk.com.

Transitions Curriculum

Course providers have worked together to identify a consistent transitions curriculum in social work programmes.  The curriculum is informed by a range of evidence, including the five-year longitudinal study of NQSWs.

The transitions curriculum should contain the following elements:

  • Reflection on the journey so far and development of your professional identity – completion of Individual Learning Plan (IDP)
  • Self-care
  • Graduate Experience
  • Employability
  • Interview preparation
  • Consideration of post registration Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) requirements.

Course providers have the flexibility to cover the curriculum in a way that fits best with their programme delivery and will involve external stakeholders as appropriate.

Your Individual Learning Plan

All students should leave their qualifying programme with an individual learning plan. This is an expectation of the Framework for Social Work Education.

You will be supported by your course provider to complete the ILP as part of the transitions curriculum. The process will help you to capture the knowledge and experience you will bring to your first post-qualifying role and identify what you see as the key areas for development going forward.

The ILP asks you to do the following:

  • Reflect your journey through your programme
  • Consider how you learn most effectively
    • Identify the key actions that will be required to assist you in meeting your ILP

You can download a copy of the individual learning plan (ILP) here. You can use this to think ahead as well as to complete the ILP. It is also a useful interview preparation tool.

Role of employers

Employers are invited to contribute to transitions curriculum in a variety of ways and provide valuable insight into the professional social work role.

We are working with employers to raise awareness of the importance of the ILP in planning your ongoing professional development as an NQSW.

You are encouraged to share your ILP with your supervisor once in employment.

Resources to Support the preparation of your ILP

As well as resources and support provided by your university programme and on this dedicated web page, the SSSC offers further support in the Career Development Toolkit.
