Maintaining and improving knowledge and skills is in the SSSC Code of Practice for Social Service Workers and is a requirement of SSSC registration.
When you register as a social worker for the first time you must meet specific continuous professional learning (CPL) requirements within the first 12 months of registration. You have 18 months if you work less than 35 hours per week. We’ll contact you 12 or 18 months after registration asking you to submit evidence of your CPL within the next two months.
CPL is framed by eight core learning elements for social workers and is accompanied by mandatory learning activity.
Please read and become familiar with Core Learning Elements for social workers: NQSW descriptors and mandatory learning activities and the information below.
You will meet your CPL requirement through self-assessment and completing mandatory learning activity linked to the core learning elements for social workers within 12 or 18 months or registration.
The core learning elements are relevant to all social workers and the NQSW descriptors set out what this means for your stage of practice.
You can access the mandatory learning activity through the dedicated SSSC CPL website.
You can read information relevant to meeting the SSSC requirements in the NQSW Supported Year Overview and Guidance 2024
You will record your learning on the NQSW continuous professional learning review template The template has a section for self-assessment, supervisor feedback, and an individual development plan.
Please complete the self-assessment at the start, middle, and end of your NQSW stage. Self-assessment is a useful way to reflect on your development, and the individual development plan section will help you to plan your learning for the year.
We will contact you 12 or 18 months after registration asking you to submit the NQSW CPL review template and the NQSW Validation and Endorsement Form within the next two months.
If you need an extension, please complete the NQSW Extension Request Form
You can upload your NQSW CPL review template and Validation and Endorsement form by logging into your MySSSC account and using the document tile.
The SSSC has created several websites that provide specific services for learning and statistic reporting.
